For your height, the 18.5 to 24.9 band corresponds to 56.7 to 76.3 kg.

Informational only, not medical advice. BMI describes populations better than individuals: it cannot tell muscle from fat. Talk to a doctor about your health.

What this tool is for

Body mass index is weight divided by height squared. It was designed to describe populations, not individuals, and it says nothing about how much of a given weight is muscle, bone or fat: athletes routinely land in the overweight band while being nothing of the kind. Treat the number as one rough signal among many. This tool is informational and is not medical advice. For anything about your health, ask a doctor.

How to use it

  1. Choose metric or imperial units.
  2. Enter your height and weight.
  3. Read the BMI value and the WHO category it falls into.

Frequently asked questions

What are the standard categories?

The WHO ranges for adults: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal, 25 to 29.9 overweight, 30 and above obese. They are not intended for children, pregnant women or highly muscular people.

How reliable is BMI?

As a population statistic it is useful. For one person it is crude, because it cannot distinguish muscle from fat or account for frame size and fat distribution. Waist measurement and body composition tell you more.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is a calculator that applies a published formula. Any decision about your health belongs with a qualified professional who knows your circumstances.
