What this tool is for
Most writing has a limit attached to it: a meta description that must stay under 160 characters, an essay with a word target, a tweet, an ad headline. This counter updates every keystroke, so you can see the number move while you cut instead of pasting into another tab to check.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Read the live counters: words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines and reading time.
- Keep editing in place until you fit the limit you need.
Frequently asked questions
How is a word counted?
A word is any run of characters separated by whitespace, which is the same rule word processors use. Hyphenated words like "state-of-the-art" count as one.
How is reading time calculated?
At 200 words per minute, the common average for adult silent reading. Technical text usually reads slower, so treat it as a floor, not a promise.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The counting runs in JavaScript inside your browser. The page makes no request with your text in it, so you can safely count a draft that is not public yet.
