No. Availability requires a whois or registry query, which needs a server. This generates candidates, and any registrar will check the shortlist in seconds.
Is a .com still necessary?
It is still what people type by default and what they assume when they hear a name spoken. Alternatives work well for developer and niche audiences, less well for a broad consumer product.
