What this tool is for

WebP holds the same visual quality as JPG in roughly a quarter to a third fewer bytes, and every browser in current use supports it. For a page carrying photographs it is one of the largest single wins available on page weight. Your images are processed by your own browser through the Canvas API. They are never uploaded, which means no queue, no size limit imposed by a server, and no copy of your photo sitting in someone else storage.

How to use it

  1. Drop in your JPG files.
  2. Set the quality: 80 is a good default for photographs.
  3. Download the WebP results and compare the sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Is WebP safe to use now?

Yes. Support covers effectively all browsers in use. If you need a fallback for very old clients, serve it through a picture element with a JPG source.
