What this tool is for
A Unix timestamp counts seconds since 1 January 1970 UTC. It appears in every log file, JWT and database row, and it is unreadable at a glance. Paste one to get the date, or pick a date to get the timestamp, with UTC and local time shown side by side so time zone mistakes surface immediately.
How to use it
- Paste a timestamp: seconds and milliseconds are detected automatically.
- Read the UTC, local and ISO 8601 renderings.
- Or go the other way: pick a date and time to get the timestamp.
- The live clock at the top shows the current timestamp, one click to copy.
Frequently asked questions
Seconds or milliseconds?
Unix time is defined in seconds, and JavaScript works in milliseconds, which is why a timestamp sometimes lands in 1970 and sometimes in the year 55000. Ten digits means seconds, thirteen means milliseconds, and both are detected here.
What is the year 2038 problem?
A signed 32-bit timestamp overflows on 19 January 2038. Systems that still store time in a 32-bit integer will wrap to 1901. Modern systems use 64 bits and are fine for longer than anyone needs.
Does a timestamp carry a time zone?
No, and that is its main virtue. It is an absolute instant in UTC. The time zone only enters when you render it for a human.
