This check runs from our server, not from your browser, and is rate limited. Nothing you enter is stored. Private and internal addresses are refused on purpose.
What this tool is for
Answers the only question that matters when a site will not load: is it down for everyone, or only for you. The request comes from our server, so a positive result means your network, DNS or ISP is the problem rather than the site. This is one of the few tools here that needs a server, because the question is about the internet rather than about your data. The request is made from our server, rate limited, and nothing you enter is stored.
What the status codes mean
The checker reports the HTTP status the site returned. A site that answers at all is up in the network sense, but the code says whether it is actually working.

Down for everyone or just you
If this check shows the site as up but your browser cannot open it, the problem is between you and the site. Work through it in this order: try another browser or a private window to rule out extensions and cache; try mobile data instead of Wi-Fi to rule out your network; flush the DNS cache, with ipconfig /flushdns on Windows or sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder on macOS; then try a public DNS resolver such as 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8.
If the site is down here too, the outage is real. Checking again in a few minutes tells you whether it is a blip or something longer, and the response time shows whether a site that is technically up is too slow to use.
If it is your site that is down
Check that the domain resolves to the right address with a DNS lookup, that the certificate has not expired with the SSL checker, and that ports 80 and 443 accept connections with the port checker. A 502 or 504 means a proxy, load balancer or CDN in front of the site could not get an answer from the server behind it. The cause can be the application, but also a wrong upstream address, a firewall or a timeout setting, so read the proxy log and the upstream log before restarting anything.

- If it loads here but not for you, the fault is between your machine and the site.

It says the site is up, but I still cannot open it.
Then the break is local: DNS cache, VPN, ISP routing or a firewall. Try the site over mobile data. If that works, your normal connection is at fault.
What response time is acceptable?
Under 200 ms is quick, under 600 ms is fine, above two seconds visitors start leaving. Note that this measures the server answering, not the whole page rendering.
